Chair’s Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland. The Department integrates the Biological Sciences with the Physical Sciences and Engineering in research and teaching. As the principal home for biophysics and biochemistry on campus, the department is the link to biology and bioengineering. As molecules are the basis for nanoscience, the department is an essential unit in the development of nanostructured materials and in the rise of nano-bio-science and technology on campus.

Our undergraduate program is innovative, directed to the career needs of our students, and provides opportunities for extracurricular and research activities. Our graduate programs offer a diversity of choices in research and career development with group sizes that allow us to focus on each person, and they are linked to National Laboratories. Our faculty are nationally and internationally recognized, integral members of professional organizations, and editors of well-recognized professional journals. Our students who come from diverse backgrounds and localities are very talented, and their career placement in optimal positions is our objective. Our facilities are first class with support personnel who make access and use of modern instrumentation a common and productive experience.
