Later in the semester, we'll use the conjugate base of acetylene for a C-C bond forming reaction. This will require formation of the conjugate base (a nucleophile) in essentially quantitative yield. The pKa's of acetylene and water are 25 and 15.74, respectively. Use these data to calculate the equilibrium constant, Keq, for the following reaction. Is hydroxide a good enough base to provide large amounts of the acetylide anion?
