The Department offers world class graduate programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Most students apply for direct admission into either the Chemistry or Biochemistry PhD program, choosing the program that best matches their professional interests. All admitted PhD students receive full financial support (stipend, tuition remission) and subsidized health benefits. Each PhD student completes a program of study that combines foundational and advanced coursework, original research and professional training.
Our 40+ member faculty offer premier research programs in fields of specialization that range from the classical subdivisions of chemistry and biochemistry to emerging areas such as supramolecular chemistry and nanoscience, bioanalytical and biophysical chemistry, materials chemistry, chemical and structural biology, and theoretical and computational chemistry. Our graduate community consists of 180 graduate students, 50 faculty, 50 post-doctoral researchers, nearly 35 technical staff members, as well as visiting researchers and graduate students from allied programs that include Chemical Physics, Biophysics, Materials Science, and Biological Sciences. Graduate students at Maryland work alongside faculty, students and other researchers , and have extensive opportunities to collaborate with scientists at the many federal laboratories in close proximity to campus, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Institute of Health (NIH), Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Our research groups are ideally sized to afford students a highly personalized program of graduate study that benefits the students.
